Experience
Professor Bertero co-founded BFP Engineers, Inc. in 2006. In addition to his involvement with BFP, he is also Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Research Engineer at the Earthquake Engineering Research Center, both at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB). Dr. Bertero joined the faculty at UCB in 1958 and for the past 48 years has carried out numerous integrated analytical and experimental studies on the seismic behavior of civil engineering facilities. From 1988 to 1990 he served as Director of the Earthquake Engineering Research Center at UCB.
Dr. Bertero has been involved with consulting work throughout his career, first as Principal with the firm of Weder-Bertero Consulting Structural Engineers in Argentina from 1949 to 1953. Since coming to Berkeley in 1958, he has been engaged as a consultant by many prominent structural engineering firms and has worked on numerous local and international projects involving tall buildings with both steel and concrete frames, dams, nuclear and fossil fuel power plants, guyed structures, industrial facilities, hospitals, pipelines, energy dissipation systems, nonlinear behavior, concrete behavior, weld inspection procedures, computational methods, and structural testing protocols. He has performed numerous peer reviews and been advisor to government agencies.
Author of over 370 papers and reports; he has received numerous honors and awards. In April 2006 he was named one of the Top 10 Seismic Engineers of the 20th Century by the Applied Technology Council and Engineering News Record. A tireless advocate for better design and construction to reduce the seismic risk worldwide, he continues to give courses and presentations about earthquake engineering and to advance the state-of-the-art in performance based seismic engineering. In addition to local presentations, he has recently given courses in the Dominican Republic, Argentina and Turkey
